Fake Job Candidate Nightmares Can Cause Real Problems

Fake Job Candidate Nightmares Can Cause Real Problems

Some IT employers eager to hire have cut back on their screening process to make onboarding easier and faster. That may make sense, depending on how complex and time-consuming your process. But a danger could be hiring unqualified or fraudulent candidates who evade your more limited efforts to verify their background.

Several issues are colliding to create this headache for employers:

  • Interviewing is often done online, not in person
  • The job may be remote, so a new employee need not show up at work and physically interact with others
  • “Deepfake” technology may allow a person to assume a stolen identity for an online interview and while working remotely
  • “Overemployment” has become more common. Thanks to remote work, people are working multiple jobs at the same time without telling their superiors what’s going on

Hiring someone who pads their resume and isn’t as skilled or experienced as they claim can seriously dent your productivity and morale. Someone secretly working multiple jobs may not put in the effort you need. After you realize you hired the wrong person, you’ll face the costs of another candidate search. But your problem could be much more severe.

There Will Be More Fake Job Candidates

Hackers may invent a professional background and identity while playing along with the job candidate charade to see if they make the cut. Given the number of open positions, these fraudsters have plenty of opportunities to practice their pitch and correct their mistakes until they find a company that makes them an offer.

The technology enabling this is getting better, many IT jobs will never be in an office again, and if their plans succeed, there’s plenty of money to be made. The chances they will be arrested and convicted are slim, so this may be a low-risk – high-reward gamble.

We Don’t Skip the Basics When Finding the Right Person for You

US employers must check to make sure all employees, regardless of citizenship or national origin, are allowed to work in the country. Under federal law, the Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 form must be filled out (the last page shows the documents the person must produce).

Although this form can be completed after the person starts working, we ensure a job candidate’s authorized to work in the US before there’s a job offer. We also perform background checks to verify the person is whom they say they are and has the skills, knowledge, and experience they claim to have.

We go through these steps so you won’t have to. You need not worry about hiring an unqualified candidate or potential security threat when you work with SkillConnect 360.
